Take a Rainbow Walk on the Wild Side!
Help your budding scientist practice honing their powers of observation by going on a Rainbow Walk! Colors are all around us and are awaiting discovery in the most unexpected places. Download our free guide to bring along or use a page in your nature journal, documenting each color you find.
Your scientist can practice writing by recording the name of the item they found in each color, or they can utilize different forms of scientific data collection by placing tally marks or checkmarks to represent how many things in each color were observed. Taking Rainbow Walks can be a fun way to engage with the world around them as they explore their surroundings searching for color much as pollinators do!
We recommend trying this out at :
Your local park
Your neighborhood
A National Forest
The grocery store
Around the house
Your own backyard
Your local farmer’s market
After you gather your data, come up with some questions or “Wonders” together.
Some topics you might explore are:
“I wonder why so many things are green...”
“Why do some birds have brightly colored feathers?”
“Why are some flowers white?”
“I wonder why tree bark comes in different colors…”
“How do flower petals make their colors?”
As always, we hope this activity brings you and your scientists hours of joyful connection and learning!
