Roll-A-Base
As you expose your students to morphemes and the underlying structures of our writing system, your students will benefit from repeated exposures to common bases. Games like Roll-A-Base give students an opportunity to practice generating words in a morphological word family while having fun- the most important factor to keep them motivated and excited about words!
Here, we’ve provided 2 leveled playing tables: one for beginners which is perfect for emergent readers or students who are just starting to learn about morphology, and one for more advanced students.
Even after students have mastered the words on the table, we find that they are eager to continue playing and practicing, strengthening their knowledge of these words as they go. If your students enjoy this game but wish to play with new bases, encourage them to create their own playing boards using bases they’ve investigated. It’s fun to do this work collaboratively with small groups of students, or individually so that students can develop their own board, then trade with a friend!
We’ve added some adaptations to our instructions to make it easy to play in virtual settings, too!

However you play, we hope you and your students use this game to share in wonder, grow in curiosity, and have fun… with words!
